This realistic fiction takes place in Mexico where an 11 year old girl lives on Rancho de las Rosas with her wealthy parents, grandmother and servants. Her life is turned upside down when bandits kills her father and her uncle sets their house on fire when Esperanza's mother doesn't want to marry him. Along with the fire the grapes are ruined and Alfonso, Hortensia and their son Miguel plan to go to California to meet up with Alfonso's brother and his family. At the last moment mother and Esperanza decide to go to California with them to escape Esperanza's uncle. They leave Abuelita behind until she is strong enough to get to California. Once they make it to California Esperanza has to learn the basics to house cleaning and other everyday things that were done for her back at the ranch.she has a difficult time fitting in since shes gone from being rich to poor when all these people at the work houses have known were being poor Her mother gets sick and they dont have money to pay for the doctors bills. Esperanza steps up to make money to pay for the bills. Will Esperanza's mother get better? Will Abuelita ever make it to California? Will Esperanza find a life she can accept as being her own?
I thought this was a very good book because it gave you a look into what life was really like. It also showed how families come together in time of need. I really think people should read it because it teaches you about what people had to go through during that time, and it is a really good novel.
