The Breadwinner

Title:  The Breadwinner
Author:  Deborah Ellis
Genre:  Realistic Fiction
Reading Level:  4.5
AR Points: 4

The Breadwinner is a realistic fiction novel set in Afghanistan. The book is about a girl named Parvana and the hard times she and her family face while living in Afghanistan while the Taliban are in power. The Taliban's weird rules cause her father to get arrested just for having a foreign education. After her father was arrested she is forced to become her family's breadwinner by pretending to be a boy and going to the Kabul market to read letters for money. She is forced to take drastic measures to get food for her family of six, not including herself! These drastic measures can be as wild as digging up people's bones and selling them for money! The Breadwinner is a really great book. Read it for yourself to find out what other things Parvana does to help her family survive.

  3. The Breadwinner was a great book, I loved it because it was a true story about a sad story. In a way the book was sad in some part, and happy in others. I was shocked that I actually liked it. If I had the chance I would read it a million times more.
